The Baldwin Foundation runs a highly secured drop-in center in Portland, Oregon USA. It is open on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 1 pm to 5 pm, and by appointment. We welcome people of any age and sex/orientation; whether their prostitution experience is current, or happened many years ago. Call 503-236-7244 for the address. Collect calls are accepted.
The drop-in center has comfortable chairs, a microwave, sewing machine, art supplies, children's toys, and a shower. A laundromat is located in the same building. Clothing is available from two nearby churches.
We can provide
counseling if desired. We have both female and male, survivor and nonsurvivor staff. We can help survivors obtain other services in the community.
We obey all state and federal laws related to confidential mental health and substance abuse information. No information is released (including whether we even know someone) without written permission, except in specific kinds of emergencies defined by law.
We will work with court-mandated clients, including people referred by probation officers and staff of Services to Children and Families, if the client signs the necessary releases. It must be remembered we are private citizens, and cannot control what legal officials choose to do. We can only advocate, and help people cope with whatever happens.
The Baldwin Foundation is not a political or religious organization. We want all survivors of the sex industry to feel welcome at our drop-in center. Some people may strongly disagree with each other about things very important to them. Religious or political arguing or preaching must be done elsewhere.
Pimps, tricks, and unsupportive "significant others" are not allowed inside the secure area.
The sex industry, like war, is obscene in its effects on people involved in it. The words used to discuss it often are obscene, too. This is not a problem. Words which attack another person's identity, such as bitch, cunt, fat pig or 'hoe, will not be tolerated.
Some survivors are literally risking their lives in trying to leave the sex industry. Who you see at our drop-in center, what you hear at our drop-in center, when you leave, leave it at our drop-in center.
WE HAVE TO WORK AS A TEAM, AND TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER AND OURSELVES. SURVIVING ALONE IS TERRIBLY HARD TO DO.
